You have waited for this moment for a long time: your braces are finally removed. Gone are the metal brackets and wires…now a beautiful, straight smile has taken their place! You are ready to indulge in the foods you have missed and complete your oral routine with ease. But the process is not entirely over. Your orthodontist is here to let you know what you can expect as you enjoy your metal-free smile.
#1. You’ll wear a retainer
After your braces are removed, you will be in the final phase of your treatment: retention. Your teeth will naturally want to begin shifting back into their previous positions. Retainers help keep them in their new place as your mouth adjusts to the changes.
There are two different types of retainers:
- Fixed Retainers – These retainers are bonded to the backsides of your teeth so they are virtually invisible. Since they will always be in place, you will not have to worry about taking in and out.
- Removable Retainers – Removable retainers are used for the top teeth and typically only need to be worn at night.
Your dentist will help you choose the retainer that’s best for you based on your specific needs. The length of time for wearing them will be based on the arrangement of your teeth before treatment. It could be from a few years to just 12 months. Eventually, your orthodontist will allow you to just wear them at night for a designated amount of time for maintenance.
#2. Expect some tooth sensitivity
For the past 18 months or more, your teeth have been under tension from the metal wires and brackets that moved them into the correct position. Your braces have also provided a cover for your teeth. Now that the tension is gone and your new smile is exposed, it’s not uncommon to experience some sensitivity. Be mindful of eating crunchy or chewy foods as you ease into the comfort of your new grin.
#3. There will likely be some discoloration
Even if you were diligent with your oral care routine with your braces, there may be some discoloration from being covered by the brackets for so long. There may also be some calcium deposits on your teeth. After a few months, when your sensitivity subsides, you can consider teeth-whitening treatments.
#4. Visit your dentist
After investing in your new smile for so long by wearing braces, you’ll want to do the most to take care of your straight pearly whites. Keep your dental health in top shape by maintaining your bi-yearly checkups and exams. You will also want to visit your orthodontist so your progress can be monitored as your wear your retainers. By setting and attending these appointments, you’ll get the most out of your new smile!
Your smile is finally free from braces, but the journey isn’t over quite yet. With just a few more things to follow through with and visits to your dentist, your new and improved smile will last for years to come!
