Dentofacial Orthopedics – Holden, MA

Aligning More Than Just Your Teeth

If you’re like most people, you associate the word “orthodontics” with teeth. Aligning the teeth certainly is a major part of what our team does here at Witt Orthodontics, PC, but Dr. Witt has several other methods of helping patients enjoy healthier, more confident smiles. One such method is called dentofacial orthopedics – a system of treatments aimed at addressing misalignment in the bones that support the teeth. With it, Dr. Witt can correct a problematic bite while also creating a more symmetrical appearance for the face. Contact our orthodontic office to learn more about dentofacial orthopedics!

Who Can Benefit from Dentofacial Orthopedics?

By modifying the shape of the face and jaw as a whole, dentofacial orthopedics is usually recommended for patients with significant overbites, underbites, or other bite alignment problems. Not only can this treatment method fix issues with the overall bite and teeth, but it may also lead to easier breathing by creating a more open airway, which can contribute to higher-quality sleep.

Dentofacial Orthopedics for Children

The bones in the face and jaw are not yet set in place in young children, making dentofacial orthopedics ideal at this age. Often, we use this treatment alongside braces or other traditional orthodontic methods in order to achieve alignment and guide the child’s dental development. Once Dr. Witt has examined your little one’s mouth, he can judge whether they could benefit from dentofacial orthopedics, discuss specific treatments that would be involved, and share an estimated timeline.

Dentofacial Orthopedics for Adults

Adults’ facial bones are more firmly embedded in their current positions, so dentofacial orthopedics tends to take a bit more time for older patients. With that being said, many adults can still benefit from this treatment. For example, if you wore braces as a child but still have an asymmetrical face, dentofacial orthopedics may be able to help with that.
