Dr. Davis Witt

Dr. Witt is a talented orthodontist near Shrewsbury who has been practicing for more than 25 years. Using his extensive skills and training to produce healthy, straighter, and more radiant smiles, his personal approach and friendly demeanor make him a popular dental professional in the community.

At just 13 years old, Dr. Witt discovered a fascination with orthodontics, especially since he underwent several treatments during this time. Witnessing the transformation of his smile, he began to feel more confident. Enjoying this new feeling, he decided that helping others achieve this same emotion was what he wanted to do with the rest of his life.

After studying at Michigan State University for two years, he transferred to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, achieving his bachelor's degree. He then went on to attend the University of Connecticut’s School of Dental Medicine, receiving his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). His education didn’t stop there though. He then enrolled in the University of Washington – Seattle’s orthodontics program. There, he earned a certificate in orthodontics and a master’s degree in dentistry.

Apart from caring for his own patients, Dr. Witt is also a faculty member at UConn. Placing the doctoral hood on his daughter, Dr. Julia Witt, he is now witnessing her desire to follow in his footsteps and pursue orthodontics.

When Dr. Witt isn’t in the orthodontic office, you’ll often find him spending time with his wife of more than 31 years, Susan, and their nine children. He’s also served as a volunteer, part-time faculty member in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Connecticut for more than 29 years. Traveling is something their family enjoys very much, and he’s often kayaking, snorkeling, skiing, playing tennis, or playing cornhole with his family.

Answering Your Orthodontic Questions

How do I find the best place to get orthodontic work done near Shrewsbury?

The best orthodontic care is going to be treatment that meets your needs and is administered by a skilled professional. So first, we encourage you to consider your needs. Do you have a budget that requires an in-network practice or flexible financing? Would you prefer care that’s closer to home? What kind of orthodontic treatment are you interested in – traditional braces, or clear aligners? Remember that your needs should also include how comfortable you feel with the orthodontist and their team. For this, we recommend scheduling a visit to the office!

Experience and proper education are important factors to look for in a skilled orthodontist. If you see “certificate of orthodontics” or “board-certified orthodontist” as part of their credentials, odds are they know what they’re doing!

Is orthodontic treatment worth it?

In most cases, absolutely! Typically, braces or clear aligners are recommended when your teeth are crooked. This isn’t simply a cosmetic issue, though. When teeth are misaligned, it can create discomfort, make chewing more difficult, put painful stress on your jaw or TMJ, or cause premature dental wear. In severe cases, teeth can even become loose and fall out. Straightening out your pearly whites will enhance your smile and benefit your oral health in the long run.

What level of education is required to be an orthodontist?

To become an orthodontist in the US, you need a bachelor's degree, either a Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine from an accredited postgraduate institution, specialized training in orthodontics plus residency, and to finally obtain a license to practice. Basically, Dr. Witt has received all the education that general dentists do, followed by several more years of study and hard work!

How long will I have to wear braces or clear aligners?

It depends on your unique smile, but on average, the treatment time for braces is 2 – 3 years, and the treatment time for clear aligners is 12 – 18 months. This estimate assumes, though, that you wear your clear aligners as instructed, and have broken brackets and wires repaired as soon as possible. Otherwise, your orthodontics won’t be able to effectively straighten your teeth, and your treatment could very well become prolonged!

Should I remove my wisdom teeth before or after orthodontic treatment?

Realistically, you should have your wisdom teeth extracted when they need to be extracted. If you wait for a year or two after a dentist recommends wisdom tooth extraction, the situation could become worse as the tooth continues to move and grow. This could cause discomfort or complications whether or not you’re already wearing orthodontics!

In a perfect world, it’s best to receive orthodontic treatment after your wisdom teeth have been removed. Sometimes pulling these molars shifts your dental structure, which can interfere with existing orthodontics or move previously straightened teeth. Give us a call if you’re looking for an orthodontist near Shrewsbury, and Dr. Witt can give you a professional recommendation in person!
