What Is Orthognathic Surgery?
Also referred to as corrective jaw surgery, orthognathic surgery is often performed to correct severe overbites and underbites that normal orthodontic treatment alone cannot sufficiently fix. Often, these procedures are needed when the upper and lower jaws have developed at different rates. During a consultation, Dr. Witt can inform you whether you or your child may benefit from orthognathic surgery. This treatment usually involves either lengthening or shortening a small section of the jawbone to bring both dental arches into proper alignment. Because patients are completely sedated for the surgery, they’ll sleep through the whole thing.
